Buying Ice Cream and Soft Serve
Rockland County

Safe or Toxic - You Decide
Be Informed

Merriam-Webster Dictionary; Ice Cream , noun
A sweet flavored frozen food containing cream or butterfat and usually eggs.
Or is it? Unfortunately, it appears the vast majority of ice cream available in your local ice cream parlor, supermarket, ice cream truck, and restaurants are made with a starter-mix of chemicals. Yes, even your local sweet shop is probably making their ice cream using a chemical ice cream starter-mix.
Buying Safe Ice Cream
On a hot summer day is there anything that tastes as good as ice cream? Traditionally, ice cream has been a delicious summer treat made from ingredients such as cream, milk, sugar, egg yolks, and flavoring such as vanilla or cocoa.

Today, many ice creams are a concoction of chemicals churned and formed to resemble ice cream from days gone by.
Ice Cream made Fresh in Store
Does your ice cream shop say: "Our ice cream is homemade in the store", leading us to believe the ice cream is fresh, natural and without chemicals?

The truth is that perhaps it's made daily in the store, but it is probably not ice cream our grandmothers would recognize. With few exceptions, today's ice cream is made with "emulsifiers that replace the surface proteins and aids in forming the network. Egg yolks were originally used as this destabilizing emulsifier, but now, ice-cream manufacturers use toxic substances such as mono- and diglycerides as well as the sorbitan ester Polysorbate 80." by preventdisease.com

Is your Ice Cream cheap? - Ask why
Often, the cheaper your ice cream, the less the ice cream contains ingredients such as cream, milk, sugar, egg yolks. Before buying any ice cream for your child or yourself, be sure you're eating real ice cream.

Evidence shows that our local ice cream store and food conglomerates alike are doing everything they can to reduce their cost of production and increase profits.
    Always Check Ingredients
  • Before eating ice cream or soft serve in your local ice cream shop ask to see the ingredients for the ice cream flavor you are buying.

  • Before you buy a carton of ice cream, check the ingredients on the carton.

  • "These ice creams often include chemicals like caroxymethyl cellulose, butyraldehyde, and amyl acetate, additives used in some commercial ice creams. How about some diethyl glycol - a cheap chemical used to take the place of eggs, which is also used in anti-freeze and paint removers. There is a long list of chemical ingredients littering many of today's most famous grocery store ice creams. Here are just some of them: Mono and diglycerides, disodium phosphate, benzyl acetate, mono stearate, propylene glycol, sodium benzoate, polysorbate 80, potassium sorbate, modified corn starch and soy lecithin."

Ice Cream and Soft Serve Safety
When ice cream is cheap, it is often made with a starter mix of chemicals that replace the few natural ingredients (cream, milk, sugar, egg yolks, and a flavor such as vanilla or cocoa) needed to make real ice cream. Before buying any ice cream for your child or yourself, be sure you're eating ice cream and not a frozen mixture of chemicals. Follow these ice cream safety tips:

  • Any Ice Cream Shop that says Ice cream made fresh daily in the store should either display a list of ingredients or have the ingredient list available for you to see. Once you've decided on a flavor, ask for the ingredient list before you buy the ice cream.

  • If the ingredients are healthy and natural, the ice cream shop will be proud to give the ingredients to you.

  • Look out for potentially toxic chemicals such as mono and diglycerides , carrageenan and polysorbate 80 . See warnings below for these chemical ingredients often used in ice cream and soft serve.

Note: The United States FDA has issued a preliminary determination that partially hydrogenated oils (which contain trans fats) are not "generally recognized as safe", which is expected to lead to a ban on industrially produced trans fats from the American diet. Read FDA Statement

Source: Dangers of Carrageenan by Dr. Andrew Weil

"All told, I recommend avoiding regular consumption of foods containing carrageenan."

Carrageenan
". . . Dr. Tobacman said that her research has shown that exposure to carrageenan causes inflammation and that when we consume processed foods containing it, we ingest enough to cause inflammation in our bodies. She explained that all forms of carrageenan are capable of causing inflammation. This is bad news. We know that chronic inflammation is a root cause of many serious diseases including heart disease, Alzheimer's and Parkinson's diseases, and cancer.

"Dr. Tobacman also told the board that in the past, drug investigators actually used carrageenan to cause inflammation in tissues in order to test the anti-inflammatory properties of new drugs. And she reported further that when laboratory mice are exposed to low concentrations of carrageenan for 18 days, they develop 'profound' glucose intolerance and impaired insulin action, both of which can lead to diabetes."
